It is said by professionals that home teeth whitening is as effective as in-office treatments, while being cheaper and more convenient.
It’s usually possible to achieve the same effect from comfort of your home, as it would be done in dental office.
Few years ago, dentist teeth whitening was more or less a complex process by making unique mouthpieces for every patient and for this reason alone, it wasn’t an option for most.
These days, things have gotten to another level and home teeth whitening has become a strong competition against dental procedures.
Types of Home Teeth Whitening
1. Brush-on whitening
2. Teeth whitening Strips
3. Whitening Trays with Bleaching Gels
Brush-on Whitening
Brush-on whitening is a great concept in principal. Brush on the formula; leave it to dry on your teeth, and let it stay overnight. Simple as it is, it is also full of flaws.
Brush-on whitening is designed for people looking for short and easy ways. It is ridiculous not to whiten your teeth the right way just to save some time, as if home teeth whitening isn’t already a fast, cheap and fairly easy procedure.
Most common flaws: When you brush on the formula, it relies on the premise that it will dry on your teeth. The problem is that if you get the formula wet, it becomes easy to rub off some parts of the whitening formulas. Some parts can rub off more, some less, and on the end you get these unevenly whitened teeth which look patchy and blotchy.
Another flaw is definitely the ingredients. The most used ingredient in whiteners is alcohol, and as you probably already know, alcohol is bad for your breath as well for your gums. Also, most of the brush-on home teeth whitening formulas contain glycerin, which sucks out the moisture from enamel, which is the number one cause of tooth sensitivity caused by whitening.
Teeth Whitening Strips
Second most common way to whiten your teeth at home is using products with teeth whitening strips. Once again, their simplicity of use is luring in people, seeking for shortcuts. Strips are easy to apply and preparations are unnecessary. Unfortunately, results are not as satisfying as expected.
Why home teeth whitening strips don’t work: Strips consist of an upper strip and a lower strip each pressed against the outer surface of your teeth.
Your teeth aren’t completely flat. They have recesses and grooves between each tooth. Strips usually can’t reach those grooves because they are flat in comparison with teeth and effects of this happening can be very bad.
The whiter your teeth get each time the more pronounced those cracks seem. When you use whitening strips you should be very careful, because you don’t want to end up looking like you have gaps between your teeth.
Whitening Trays with Bleaching Gels
Of all home teeth whitening methods this one provides the best combination of most efficient and most affordable whitening available.
The secret good to know is that most bleaching gels are exactly the same as those that you see at the dentist.
Another thing to mention is that most of the bleaching gels available at stores are of very poor quality and one should be careful when buying teeth whitening gel. They are stored in warehouses for a very long time and because they are designed to have a low price, the concentrations of active ingredients are low.
When buying, be sure to buy a gel with at least 21% concentration, which will make teeth whiter in shorter time.
Lastly, the one thing in common between dental bleaching gels and home teeth whitening gels is – the carrying agent in both is glycerin. There is nothing wrong with glycerin itself, only when it is mixed with carbamide peroxide, it is used to draw water out of enamel of the tooth in order to speed up the bleaching process. Once again, this causes the common side effect of teeth bleaching, which are sensitive teeth!
We recommend using TheraBrite Formula Whitening Kits by Dr. Harold Katz, which don’t use glycerin as a base and that is one very good reason why it’s so unique.
